Uzunkum Living Space Urban Design Project
Born from the dream of
overcoming the walls that once separated the city from the waves, this project
is the story of Trabzon’s reunion with the sea. Spanning 734,750 m² along the
coastline, the design brings together the powerful nature of the Black Sea, the
historical memory of Trabzon, and a contemporary vision of public life.
The project highlights
ecological solutions in its landscape design. With the daylighting of Karşıyaka
Stream, natural cycles are restored, while artificial hills, thematic gardens,
grass amphitheaters, and wide meadows offer diverse spatial experiences. A
vibrant landscape with children’s playgrounds, adventure parks, skateparks, and
picnic lawns appeals to all ages, bringing the community together once again by
the sea.
Architectural
interventions establish new focal points along the shoreline, transforming the
city’s relationship with the sea into vibrant public spaces. Beneath the shade
of the “Urban Canopy,” cafés, restaurants, retail units, and administrative
spaces form a lively social hub by the water. The Harbor Square and fish
restaurants, linked with seating terraces and piers, revive the city’s maritime
culture, while lookout
terraces invite visitors to gaze across the horizon. Alongside the city beach and promenades, these spaces reintroduce
unique public venues where Trabzon once more meets the sea.
The project’s mobility
strategy addresses the barrier created by the coastal highway. Four access
points reconnect the site to the city, while a continuous 4.5 km cycle path,
pedestrian promenades, and car-free axes ensure uninterrupted movement along
the shoreline, strengthening the bond between city dwellers and the sea.
The Uzunkum Living
Space Urban Design Project is not merely a coastal redevelopment; it is a
rewriting of Trabzon’s relationship with nature, history, and community.
Answering the city’s long-standing longing for the sea, it promises to breathe
new life into Trabzon—embracing both the calm rhythm of daily life and the
vision of a sustainable urban future.
