Taksim Square and Surroundings

Taksim Square

Project Description
Yesterday - Today - Tomorrow, Istanbul: Taksim Square

Taksim Square is not only the significant urban space for Istanbul but also one of the most iconic sites of Turkey. The square is a place of memory, bringing episodes of Ottoman, Byzantine and Republican Turkish heritage together. In such a rich urban landscape, the project embraces continuity and serenity as the main concepts of its design approach.

Continuity is evident in the overall design scheme that uses as many of the historical references and footprints of previous structures as possible. On a structural level, continuity is also visible in the unceasing lines that transform and become walls, sitting elements or tracks on the pavement. The hard landscape surfaces are balanced with the rich green texture of Gezi Park, as well as linear water features or green patches. All the components of this densely-used urban environment are designed to be serene touches to an already rich landscape.

The vision for Taksim Square claims the entire area for pedestrians. All the vehicular traffic is circumvented or buried under the ground, while pedestrians can access the square very easily via public transportation. The square, thus, lives for and with pedestrians day and night, embellished by a stunning nightscape.
